AI is Not a Coworker: It's an Exoskeleton

🦾 We’re thinking about AI the wrong way.

Ben Gregory from Kasava proposes a metaphor that completely changes how to understand AI at work: it’s not an autonomous employee. It’s an exoskeleton.

What does a physical exoskeleton do?

  • Ford deployed EksoVest in 15 plants: 83% reduction in injuries
  • BMW reports 30-40% reduction in muscle effort
  • Sarcos Guardian XO provides 20:1 strength amplification → 100 lbs feel like 5 lbs

The exoskeleton doesn’t replace the worker. It amplifies them. The human still makes the decisions; the exo gives them capacity to execute better.

AI should work the same way:

❌ Autonomous AI that “decides on its own” → unmet expectations, hallucinations, loss of control

✅ AI as exoskeleton → amplifies what the human already knows how to do:

  • Writes commits and PR descriptions in seconds
  • Analyzes code patterns no human could spot manually
  • Extracts themes from hundreds of hours of customer calls

The right micro-agent does ONE thing well. Not “acts like a developer.” But: “helps write clear commit messages.”

The key concept is “amplification vs. replacement.” An exoskeleton doesn’t walk for the soldier — it helps them carry more weight without injury. Similarly, AI should reduce cognitive friction in repetitive tasks and free the human for decisions that require judgment, context, and intuition.
