Dark Mode vs. Light Mode: Which Is Better for Your Eyes?

··221 words·2 mins·

🌙 Dark Mode vs. Light Mode: which is better for your eyes? Science has an answer.

Nielsen Norman Group reviewed the academic literature and the results might surprise you:

👁️ For people with normal vision, light mode improves visual performance in most tasks. The reason: more light → pupil contracts → fewer spherical aberrations → better focus.

But there are important nuances:

  • 😷 People with cataracts or cloudy ocular media may actually perform better with dark mode
  • 🔭 Prolonged exposure to light mode may be associated with developing myopia
  • ☀️ In bright ambient lighting conditions, the difference between modes nearly disappears

NN/g’s recommendation: don’t impose light mode without offering a dark mode option. Apps designed for long-form reading should always provide a dark mode toggle.

💡 Explanation in a nutshell
#

Light mode works like a well-lit room: the pupil adapts and focuses precisely. Dark mode is like reading in dim light: the pupil dilates to capture more light, but that introduces optical distortions. However, if your eye lens is cloudy (as in cataracts), less light can actually be beneficial.
