📁 The .claude folder: where Claude Code’s configuration lives#
Most people use Claude Code without looking at the folder that actually shapes its behavior. But .claude is where project instructions, permissions, and custom commands live.
What matters#
- 🧭
CLAUDE.mdloads the main context Claude uses in a session - 🧩
rules/splits instructions by topic or path - ⚙️
commands/adds custom slash commands - 🔒 The project folder is shared; the user folder keeps local preferences
The idea is simple: if you want Claude to work the way your team needs, you have to tell it there.
🪄 Quick explanation#
Think of .claude as a car’s control panel.
You don’t stare at the engine while driving, but you do need the controls for lights, mirrors, and driving mode.
👉 .claude does the same thing: it organizes how Claude works without repeating instructions in every chat.
